Growing in the North
The growing climate in Dawson City, Yukon is temperate even though the winters can sometimes get down to -60℃. At Bear Creek, we farm our flowers in the black rich soil of the old river bottom of the Klondike River. The river is now on the other side of the valley because of the gold dredges that moved millions of tons of rock looking for gold. Even though the dredges are gone, the scars of piles of gravel, shaped like long worms, are scattered across the valley. Yukon Butterflies Flower Farm is on a small portion of the valley that was never turned over by the dredges, so the soil here is very fertile. This in combination with the midnight sun, which gives us almost 23 hours of daylight by June 21st, produces incredible flowers. See an abundance of pictures from my previous year of farming below!
